# Block non-Latin characters

> Block address details written in non-Latin scripts, such as Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or Korean.

Shipping labels and carrier systems often only accept the Latin alphabet. This rule blocks checkout when a field you choose contains characters outside it.

## Settings

| Setting | Description |
| - | - |
| Countries | **All countries**, or only orders shipped to **Specific countries**. |
| Apply fields | The fields to check. Choose at least one. |
| Allow Extended Latin Characters | Allows accented letters. See below. |
| Validate in | **Shipping address**, **Billing address**, or both. |
| Message to display | What the customer sees. English is required. |
| Rule status | Active, Testing or Deactivated. See [Rule status and testing](https://codebeans-cb-checkout-rules.mintlify.site/rules/rule-status-and-testing.md). |
| Checkout behavior | See [Common rule settings](https://codebeans-cb-checkout-rules.mintlify.site/rules/common-settings.md#checkout-behavior). |

### Fields you can check

Click the **Apply fields** box to open the list, then tick the fields you want:

* Address line 1
* Address line 2
* City
* Company

The message appears next to each field that has a problem.

## Allow Extended Latin Characters

This option changes how strict the rule is.

> Only basic English letters, numbers and common symbols are allowed. Accented letters like `é`, `ñ` or `ü` are **blocked**.

> If you sell in Europe or Latin America, turn **Allow Extended Latin Characters** on, so customers can type their address with accents.
