# Limitations

> Where checkout rules run, where they don't, and other limits to know about.

Codebeans Checkout Rules uses Shopify's checkout validation, so it follows the same limits as every checkout validation app.

## Where rules don't run

Shopify only runs checkout rules during the online checkout. They don't run for:

* In-store checkouts in the Shopify POS app.
* Orders created by apps or other systems through Shopify's order API.
* Staff editing an existing order in the Shopify admin.
* Automatic subscription renewals.

## Limits

| Limit | Value |
| - | - |
| Active checkout rules per store, across all apps | 25 |
| Size of one custom rule | 10,000 bytes, shown in the **Rule Complexity Budget** |
| Customer tags checked by one custom rule | 100 |
| Customer metafields checked by one custom rule | 1 |
| Each preset rule | Can be added once per store |

## Other things to know

* Rules that check the shipping address run once the full address is entered and shipping options appear.
* With **Validate on add-to-cart** on, details that are only known at checkout, such as the address, can't be checked at the cart stage.
* **Collection** conditions use the products in the collection at the time you saved the rule.
* Conditions on customer tags, order history and metafields need a logged-in customer. Guest customers have no tags and no order history.
* The checkout favicon needs a Shopify Plus store.
